Quick and Easy Pom-Poms

"These pom-poms are my favourite thing to give to friends in that moment of panic when you've forgotten that it's their birthday. And what's more, they only take five minutes to make. A soft scrapbuster, even when you've decided to shave off the long bits that stick out to make it give a rounder shape, you can save all of the off cuts as stuffing for other crafts, as they're super soft and a much better equivalent than the scratchy cheap stuffings you can buy in craft stores. It's for this reason that I always keep a box of wool off cuts, just in case I want to make pillow or teddy, or something-or-other that needs stuffing. Another upside of this is that it's a kid friendly task that can be taught to kids 5 up (with help from adults on the cutting part!) The only hard part is cutting off the edges to make it rounder, and the most time consuming bit is wrapping the wool around. WARNING: Do not let children attempt to make if you fear that they might wrap wool round their fingers too tight! You MUST wrap it round very lightly. If fingers start to turn blue, PLEASE take wool off fingers as fast as possible. "

Materials List

  • Wool
  • Scissors
  • A hand :)

Instructions

  1. First, get your wool, and start to wrap it round four fingers (you can wrap it round 3 or 2 if you like, but not 1)

  2. If you are doing 4 fingers, I recommend wrapping the wool round your fingers at least 100 times for a nice volumptious finish (I know it sounds like a lot, but it will only take 1-2 minutes!)

  3. Carefully slide the wool off your fingers

  4. Open the wool hole wide (so as not to lose your place)

  5. Cut off the string connecting to the ball of yarn

  6. Cut off a length (about 10-12 cm) of wool

  7. Tie the length around the circle of wool

  8. Pull tight, really tight!

  9. Snip off the side. Repeat with the other side

  10. (Optional) Snip off the long bits for a rounded finish
